When I called my Grandpa a few months ago to tell him his great-grandchild would be a great-grandson, he shared some of his grandfatherly wisdom, thoughts on parenting, and then told me "You need to get that boy a motorcycle. Every boy needs a motorcycle." I promised we would get him a motorcycle (something child-like with wheels, think big wheel style, not the real thing). During a recent visit on our way back from the family wedding, Grandpa was very concerned that I hadn't gone to get any food from the kitchen to feed my starving husband. I really did check with C but he kept reassuring me that he was fine. At some point, Grandpa disappeared and when he reappeared, he handed me a Hardees sack. I guessed he had taken pity on C and had walked across his backyard to get him something from Hardees. Well, I opened the sack and inside was a wind-up toy that was a special gift for our son. A motorcycle!
My mom and grandma stopped through for a quick visit this week. It was so nice to see them and I especially enjoyed hearing Grandma's advice and stories after raising five children. With her first child (my mom), she did not have such modern conveniences as a washing machine. The baby clothes got cleaned by boiling them in a big pot on top of the stove!
I'm very thankful for modern conveniences and especially thankful for all of my grandparents. I consider it a unique blessing that I had the chance to know and have a good relationship with all of my grandparents as a child and adult as they were all living until about three years ago (when two of them passed away). I'm amazed that throughout my life, they have always found a way to provide unconditional love and support, even living miles away. Carl and I are both named after our grandparents, which we consider an honor. We're thankful for grandparents and for the positive impact they have had on our lives. We look forward to Baby B getting to know his own grandparents in a few short months!
Picture Note: The other pictures above show a "representation of my grandparents". Upon entering our home, there sits a black rocking chair. This belonged to my paternal grandmother and was passed on to me after she passed away. Sitting on the rocking chair, you'll see a special pillow made out of material my paternal great-grandmother wove a skirt out of many years ago-my aunt made each member of our family a pillow out of these special weavings. Resting on top of the rocking chair is a baby blanket made by my maternal grandmother for baby. In another place in our house, you'll see a quilt rack (made by my maternal grandfather) with a quilt that belonged to my maternal great-grandmother and my baby blanket with birds and flowers (made by my paternal great-grandmother). -Sorry for all of the "maternal" and "paternal" lingo. I really have more endearing names for them but wanted you to know that ALL have been a special part of my life.- These are just a few of the many handmade treasures around our place. As you can tell, our family is full of creative people who have an appreciation for handmade items. Funny, I remember as a child that my grandma would say she needed to go do her mission work and this REALLY meant that she needed to go to a craft show or art show to support local artists AND buy some things she enjoyed. I often find myself going to craft shows smiling to myself as I'm not only buying things I like, I'm really doing "mission work".
