Fun Times

My 6 week postpartum checkup was yesterday. The staff told us that they like to meet the babies so to be sure and bring Colin in for the appointment. We especially had fun seeing the nurse who had done my non-stress tests from week to week. We'd really had some time to get to know each other during those appointments. Such a special, caring person she is and it was nice to be able to thank her and introduce her to the little person behind the heartbeat.

The appointment with the doc went well. All is healing fine. The surprise of the appt. came when the doc first walked in and said "Oh, I need to get pictures". She left the room and C and I wondered if it was typical to take pics of the babies she's delivered. She returned and had two pictures with her. These happened to be two snapshots of my uterus and my fibroids-yikes. The photos were taken as she was doing my surgery. Let's just say that I'm a unique case and unique enough that there were pictures to prove it. The fibroid she'd been watching during my pregnancy grew to be 15 cm. She pulled out some measuring tape so I could have the full visual and described the size as larger than a babies' head. Oh my.

When I was pregnant with Colin, we would arrive at the doc appointments and of course, spend time waiting in the waiting room. Part of our waiting involved people watching. There always seemed to be parents with their toddlers or moms holding babies. We would look at each other and marvel that we would have one of "those" some day soon. Babies would cry, moms and dads would take turns rocking them in their car seats, and parents would even compare notes with one another about how they handled their children's behavior in public places. Yesterday, there we were with our own child, waiting in the waiting room, carrying Colin in his car seat and trying to figure out where the best place was to change his diaper.

We spent time taking in our pre-baby vs baby days yesterday and taking in the reality that we are now parents. We spent so many pre-baby days making stops at Trader Joe's and yesterday, I'm excited to report that Colin took his first trip to Trader Joe's. I pushed him in his car seat in one shopping cart while C pushed the cart for groceries. I found myself doing laps around the store as Colin was quite happy being on the move and looking at the lights. A grandparent admired him and checked to see when he was born and how much he weighed. She'd had a grandchild born on Sept. 3, the day before Colin was born. We went out to eat at a restaurant for the first time as a family yesterday and found ourselves amazingly saying "three" when the hostess asked the typical question of "How many"? During a quick stop at the baby store, we shared how strange it was to be walking through the store with an actual baby. As we prepared for Colin's arrival, we'd spent much time there making purchases in eager anticipation of this person who was now a very real part of our lives.

C and I were a bit obsessive about lathering on the hand sanitizer at every stop. Past favorite eating places became questionable because of salad bars and buffets having potential germs on the shared utensils. With so much out there now about H1N1 concerns, we found ourselves being extra cautious. After watching the news recently and feeling scared at the reality that people are dying, I told Colin that we would just keep him safe by not taking him out anywhere ever. Well, I know we will take him out, but we'll just try to be smart about it. Sounds like at this point in Colin's life, the advice is to avoid crowds and to avoid people coming up and touching him. Plus, Colin's pediatrician has advised us to get the vaccine. We're told that parents of newborns are listed in the top tier of people to get vaccinated.

Colin seemed to enjoy traveling and being in his car seat. His eyes kept watching out the window towards the light and movement. His eyes are taking in more and more. He's at such a fun point of his development as he's really reacting to seeing us and hearing our voices. He'll just stare when we talk to him and we've even caught him in a few smiles. Yesterday, we were amused by watching C hold Colin while doing a bouncing motion. C would stop the motion and Colin would just keep on bouncing on his own. He's quite entertaining. We find we don't need to watch television near as much as he's all the entertainment we need. : )
