Movement and Expansion

So, I knew I was expanding. Clothes have been getting tighter and more uncomfortable. I've become a big fan of my sweats. I come home from work and what goes on instantly? Sweats and a sweatshirt. I recently had a colleague come up to me after I'd been teaching a lesson. She smiled and said "You're showing." Oh my! I was a bit mortified that someone had been watching my expanding waistline during the lesson but I handled it with a smile and a "Do you really think so?" Clothes as a pregnant person become quite interesting as growth happens over time. I'm not quite ready for official maternity clothes but am at an in-between point of needing some larger clothes to accommodate this larger version of me. I went shopping and tried on clothes last night and geez, it was a bit of a reality to not only THINK I'd expanded but to SEE it in letter and number form! As someone who has always been weight conscious, it is an interesting experience to have my mind thinking "Oh no, I'm growing" while another part of me is saying "Oh yeah, I'm supposed to be growing."

I absolutely cannot wait to begin feeling this little miracle moving around inside me! Pre-baby, I thought it sounded like an alien, odd experience to grow a person and actually feel it moving. Now? My feelings are very different. From day to day, I see and feel certain signs that let me know I'm pregnant. I now look forward to feeling the baby move so I can have that extra reassurance that a person is really there and something is REALLY happening. Plus, I must admit eagerly anticipating movement out of sheer curiosity of what it will feel like. According to websites I've looked at, my wish should come true in the next few weeks. Current moms say to expect a "fluttering" feeling and even a bit of questioning such as "Wait, did something just happen? Maybe not. Well, there it was again. Maybe I DID feel something."

  1. I'm just back from Jane Yolen's 70th birthday party with family and friends. A huge crowd gathered for the festivities -- some obviously in their 60s and 70s to counterbalance Jane, who looks a good ten years younger than she is. But there were kids and grandkids, too -- Jane's and those of friends. The youngest was a babe just 10 weeks old. It was something of a miracle the parents had her back by the time they were ready to leave -- between Jane's daughter, Heidi, and her daughter-in-law, Betsy, the wee babe spent the party happily in the arms of women whose own children spent the party playing with other children and teens their own ages. It was fun being in the company of so many generations at once!

The fluttering feeling sounds a lot more comfortable than the part later when you start wondering whether there's a baby or a gymnast in there. But it's all intriguing!

Do you have a nickname for the baby in utero? An acquaintance of mine who gave birth just 2 weeks ago referred to her baby as "Niblet" until he was born.

  2. The birthday party sounds like fun. Bet the parents enjoyed everyone playing "pass the baby". Yeah, fluttering sounds good...a nice kick in the ribs or the bladder later on? Not so much. But intriguing...definitely! No nicknames as of yet. Right now we refer to the baby as "the baby". Can't wait to find out if we're having a boy or a girl so we can more accurately refer to baby as he or she-anything but "it"!
